Adult Weight Loss Vacations Can Be Effective, But Is What You Are Paying For Helping You Lose Weight?

Author: Debra Stefan

Face it. You have tried and still cannot maintain weight loss. You know it is time to change and the Biggest Loser weight loss retreats are springing up all over the country. It has worked on national television and the results are highly credible but how can you afford to lose weight on a fitness vacation? What are you actually paying for? Here are 7 things to evaluate when counting costs.

To truly assess “apples to apples” we need to dissect just what services you are getting that actually help you lose weight and keep it off. You need to separate actual weight loss services and amenities according to how they directly, not indirectly get you results.

Recognize the difference in an “amenity” and a “service”. Amenity is added comfort and convenience and it tends to add high dollar value to the cost of a program. Ask yourself a€¦ Service or Amenity?

  1. MEALS PREPARED BY A CHEF – This would be like paying someone else to exercise for you, wouldn’t it? Instead of a chef preparing your food…YOU need to learn how to prepare the right foods right at home. How else will this program work to maintain your weight loss? Will a chef be coming home with you to make sure that the food is weighed and measured for the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fat? No, this is not rocket science and you must learn for yourself if you expect to succeed at home.
  2. EXPERIENCED TRAINERS – You can expect the staff to have some experience in training. Even if they just stand there holding a clipboard while counting your repetitions, they have been in the training environment. Okay, so they are “experienced”. Ask who your trainer will be and if you can review their profile on the website. How are you going to feel being trained by a twenty-something? Find out how long they have been in the industry. Where is the authority that comes with a lifetime of living and teaching a lifestyle? Working for a gym chain is not the experience level that you want to pay for in a lifestyle program.
  3. HIGH TECH FAT TESTING – You already know you are overweight. Do you want to spend more money on “technology” to find out just how fat you are? Definitely take your baseline weight, measurements, body fat & BMI, plus photo documentation as a means to compare progress. However, you can avoid the additional cost of clinical testing such as underwater body fat analysis and VO2 max. Just how important is it to know how fat and out of shape you really are by the most expensive laboratory methods?
  4. REFRIGERATOR/KITCHENETTE- Do you really need this expensive amenity if you are being held accountable for eating under supervision? Sounds like self-sabotage waiting to happen if you have access to your own private Refrigerator or Kitchenette. When amenities like this are listed, it can only mean that they are trying to add value to justify their price. Ask yourself how this will help keep you on track when you are paying to eat correctly under supervision.
  5. AIRFARE – Forget about having your airfare picked up in the price. That sounds good, but you do realize that the cost is covered by what you pay, anyway. That isn’t getting the pounds off, either. This convenience would be an expensive amenity.
  6. THERAPY – If the program is providing a psychotherapist, then you can expect to pay a lot more. If necessary, stick with your previously established therapist for phone consults. Establishing a relationship with a therapist takes time so how can you expect to take up with a new therapist when you are away from home?
  7. FINANCING – Do you really want to incur debt to have to worry about later? Debt is just another reason to stress out and overeat. Why not choose the most affordable services and plan for your budget?

To sum it up, a residential fitness and weight loss camp can be affordable. What’s more, losing weight and keeping it off can save you money when you factor in the reduced health risk, higher energy to be more productive, and ONE size wardrobe!
